Six of one review: all of this has happened before
April 15, 2008 – 12:26 pm by AndrewAs always there are spoilers for the episode in this review, don’t read if you haven’t seen it
Good episode. First of all, Starbuck totally did what I said and told Roslin “I listened to you with the arrow, why wont you listen to me?” Too bad Roslin doesn’t believe her at all, good thing she has bad aim. Or was it divine intervention?
The early scene where the Cylons discuss the final five is also very interesting. Leoben says, “What their eyes must have seen, witnessed over time..” How long are they supposed to have been around? Millennia? Maybe the final five persist, from loop to loop, always trying to break everyone free of the cycle, and always failing. We also have a new tidbit on why the Cylons aren’t supposed to think about them: knowing who they are threatens their survival. How? Maybe finding out their identity leads to the perpetuation of the loop. It’s also really interesting that the 4 know that they’re Cylons but nothing else. Did they put themselves in this position?
Starbuck felt as though she’s been to Earth before? Maybe Earth is like heaven or something. It’s where we go when we die…and somehow she came back. And she’s going to lead all of humanity there, aka to their death like the Cygod said. I don’t know but something freaky and mystical is definitely going on.
I love Gaius’ description of the music of existence. I think it’s really well written, and read, and also I’m a sucker for metaphysical stuff like that. It also ties in with a line Six said about life and music in the first opera house scene at the end of season 1. The appearance of head-Gaius in his head further affirms my theory that the head fantasies of Six and Baltar are actually representatives of some entity, like God. Six has repeatedly told Gaius that she is an angel. And like head-Six he is insightful about things, like the fact that Tory is special.
As for the scene where Adama and Rosilin discuss Kara…wow. Telling him to sit in the beginning, big mistake Roslin, he’s not your dog. Adama considering that Kara’s rebirth might be a miracle is awesome, he doesn’t usually go for that kind of thing. But the really amazing part of this scene was when Adama said to Roslin she might be worried that her “death may be as meaningless as everyone’s else’s.” So cold. Wow Adama, harsh. Real, insightful, but super harsh. And then she pulls out a clump of hair, holy shit this show is dark.
The whole Lee joining the government seems stupid to me. Let’s see where they go with it. And as for his departing ceremony, nothing wrong with it in theory, but it was like 2 minutes of clapping.
And I don’t think they know what to do with Athena this season.
And now for the really big one, crazy new six gave the centurions free will?! Is she frakking insane? This is a really big deal in the status quo of the show, it basically upends it. The Cylons now have their own robotic rebellion to deal with. All of this has happened before…? This changes everything, whatever the Cylons were, in terms of their relationship with the humans, they are now something very different. For one thing I don’t think the humans need to worry about Cylon attacks anymore. Of course they don’t know about it, but I suspect they’ll find out.
So in the end Adama trusts Starbuck enough to give her a chance. Not too surprising, he usually goes with his heart.
Can’t wait till next week

head-gaius was not only a sweet plot element, but also some of the best comic relief ever.
